Kalsoy-Kallur-Lighthouse-Hike

Kalsoy, one of the most beautiful Faroe island is a perfect day trip and with the possibility to extend it by staying overnight camping or renting a hut on the island. The biggest attraction of the island is the hike to Kallur Lighthouse on the edge of the island. This blog is an ultimate travel guide with all the information that you should know before visiting and what you should expect there.

Kalsoy is comparatively an isolated island only linked to rest of the Faroes by a short ferry from Klaksvik. The total population of the island is less than 100.

Hiking to Kallur Lighthouse

Distance: 3.5 km

Difficulty: Easy to Medium

Time: 2 hours

We took ferry from Klaksvik at 15:30 and upon arriving in Syðradalur, Kalsoy drove directly to Trøllanes on a very narrow road passing four dark tunnels, the last tunnel just before Trøllanes is 2km long. The bus to Trøllanes was also waiting there for the ferry passenger. Trøllanes is a very small village with a population of only 20 people and has a car park, Cafe and toilets for the visitors.

The hike to Kallur lighthouse starts from the car park

Start of the hiking trail from Trøllanes to Kallur lighthouse

The start of the hike (see the above picture) is steep and very muddy slippery pathway so you must have good sturdy hiking shoes to avoid constantly falling down especially on the way back.

After the first steep section, the rest of the hike is fairly flat and gain continuously some elevation towards lighthouse which is visible midway through the hike

Once you reach the lighthouse, you have two paths, one that goes down on a narrow ridge to the famous viewpoint of the lighthouse with dramatic cliffs behind and the other path goes to the right. All the Instagram pictures are taken from the narrow ridge behind the lighthouse and the path is safe to walk with some caution. There are numerous photography spots to take pictures of the cliffs and lighthouse.

The views from the path on the right side are not anything spectacular but very nice walk in good weather conditions. When we reached there it started to rain, and we rushed back to the car park. Due to rain, the trail was in worse condition, we saw some tourists hiking in sneaker's shoes with no grip and they could barely stand or walk on the trail.

Where to Stay in Kalsoy

The only option that we found was to camp near the small village of Mikladalur (Kalsoy) or stay in a rental hut which is on the same camping site. The fee for camping is 100 DKK per person and cost of the rental hut is 450 DKK for the whole hut, the camping permit and rental hut keys can be obtained from the tourist information office in Klaksvik. There are facilities of toilets and showers which are shared between guests of the camping and hut but the kitchen usage is solely for the guests staying in the hut.

When we reached the campsite, it was still raining and we had to wait in the car hoping for the rain to stop to pitch our tents and prepare some food.
