How to Explore Mizen head cliffs

Mizenhead-Ireland

Mizen Head, one of the extreme points with its dramatic cliff scenery is a major tourist attraction on the Island of Ireland. The tip of the peninsula is almost an island cut off from the main island, now connected with a bridge which gives access to the signal station, weather station and a lighthouse. The signal station is now a museum.

Cliffs at Mizen head are as beautiful as Cliffs of Moher but less commercialized due to its location.

Mizen Head Visitor Centre

The Mizen head cliffs can be accessed by buying a ticket at the visitors centre which costs 7.50€ for adults and for a family 25€. The tickets include admission to the Signal station museum. For the opening hours and actual entrance fee check their website

At the visitors center, there is a nice cafe serving hot food, drinks, cakes and a gift shop.

Drive to visit Mizen Head from Cork/Killarney

Mizen head ideally should be a stop either after Ring of Kerry or before, if you are coming from Cork. It is around 2½ hours drive from either Cork or Killarney through gorgeous twisty roads with beautiful views all around, and small traditional colourful villages like Goleen.

How to visit Mizen Head - My Experience

After doing Ring of Kerry I drove towards Mizen head and decided to stay overnight in Glengarriff. From Glengarriff, it is around one hour drive to Mizen Heads. There is a big and free parking. After buying the ticket I walked down through a nicely built walking path to the bridge connecting the small island, that had the signal station and a viewing platform. The path is straight forward to follow. The bridge is brilliant, relatively high above the water and suspended between cliffs. After crossing the bridge if you turn right you will be at the viewing platform and if you turn left and continue walking you will reach the signal station.

Keep an eye on the waters some times you might be lucky to see dolphins and seals in the waters near the Signal station.

Expect to be here for around 2 hours. Even though it is far but worth visiting and highly recommended. I think along with Slieve League and Cliffs of Moher these are the best cliffs in Ireland.

Here are some of the pictures to get you to familiarize with the area:

Pro Tip

If you are planning to see cliffs of Kerry or Mizen Head, it's better to visit Mizen head and be combined easily with Ring of Kerry Drive.
