Lago di Carezza with its emerald waters and picturesque perfect setting is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Italian Alps. The lake is a very popular destination among tourists and photographers wanting to take amazing pictures for Instagram.

This guide has everything that you should know before visiting this stunning place.

How to Get there

The nearest biggest city is Bolzano (Bozen) and is 35 minutes drive from the lake. It is a beautiful drive and along the lake is a big paid parking for visitors. The parking is very cheap and costs only 1€ for every hour after the first 15 minutes.

There is also a bus leaving every hour from Bolzano bus station and stops along the lake. I took a picture of the Bus timings at the lake but it might change depending on the season so for actual bus timings please visit this website.

Lago di Carezza (Karersee)

Lago di Carezza (Karersee) is a very small alpine lake only 300m long and 140m in width famous for its wonderful colour and reflection of the surrounding peaks of Latemar mountain range in the Dolomites. The lake is along the road and apart from driving or taking a bus, there is no physical effort to get to it. During the day it is very busy and visitors tend to take a shortstop before driving away to other destinations. The visitor's centre is really good and there is a cafe which serves hot meals and drinks.

There is a circular walking path around the lake and can be completed in less than half an hour. The lake comes under a protected area and is not allowed to cross the fence which separates the lake from the hiking path. To see the lake plan at least an hour

There are a number of hiking trails in the surrounding area. Have a look at the below map of different hiking trails in the area.

Best Time to Visit

Sunset and Sunrise is the best time to visit but in my opinion, sunrise is even more spectacular when the peaks behind the lake light up and reflect in the calm waters of the lake. I visited for both sunrise and sunset but unfortunately, the weather was terrible and I couldn't see the proper reflections of the peaks. A clear, sunny day is definitely the best way to see the lake.

Where to Stay

Bolzano and the area surrounding the lake has hundreds of different accommodations to choose from for all kinds of budget. I stayed at a Bed & Breakfast in the small village named Nova Levante in Welschnofen which is only 5km away from the lake and has many restaurants.
